Types of newsprint. Types of paper - basic materials

Modern paper is in no way inferior to that made by hand by our ancestors. Although, as before, paper is made from waste paper and rags, only on a larger scale. Paper varies not only in thickness and structure, but also in color, resistance to moisture and strength. It is impossible to count the number of types; it is constantly growing. Of course, if you are doing origami, then you just have to know everything about your working material.

Before you start working, you need to decide which paper is suitable for this and take into account all the properties. One paper may be thicker, another less so; one product will hold its shape well, while the other may simply fall apart. All paper contains glue. It binds together the wood fibers from which paper is made. The amount of glue content affects its strength.

Origamists use several types of paper, which are more or less suitable for making works.

1. Writing paper or printing paper.

It is of very high quality, easy to fold, and holds its shape well. Almost all writing paper consists of 90% cellulose fibers and contains no wood. It can be made from various raw materials containing mineral fillers. There are several types of paper finishing: priming, calendering, glazing and watermarking. Most often, in origami, they use regular printing paper, matte or glossy, of high grade.

2. Newsprint.

It is often made from recycled paper and cellulose, with the addition of filler. As the name suggests, it is intended for printing newspapers. The fibers of this paper are weakly glued, so when wet they tear and the product loses its shape. This paper is not suitable for creating serious products, except perhaps for making samples and teaching basic folding skills. Although, it is widely used in one-time crafts: hats, airplanes and fans.

3. Wrapping paper.

Made from a mixture of natural and recycled fibers. Intended for gift wrapping. There are many varieties of such paper: it can be thin and smooth, thick and embossed. This type of paper is widely used in creating origami. For example, glossy is great for creating toys; it holds its shape perfectly. Self-adhesive paper is used as decoration (eyes, mouth, etc.).

4. Wallpaper paper.

It is mainly divided into two types: smooth with a pattern and embossed. This paper is only suitable for large items. I don’t recommend starting your education in the art of origami with it; it doesn’t hold the bend well.

5. Printing paper.

It is also called magazine paper. Used for printing magazines and covers, and geographic maps. This paper is distinguished by its smoothness and strength. In origami, it is used to make water toys, since it does not deform when wet.

6. Tracing paper.

Almost transparent, thin paper. It comes in several colors. Impregnated with wax and oil. Origami is widely used in making lanterns. In the kirikomi technique, it is used to make insect wings.

7. Cardboard.

Cardboard differs from other types of paper in several ways, the main one being the large amount of mass per unit area. Cardboard can be single-layer or multi-layer. Cardboard is used only by professional craftsmen, since this type of paper does not allow mistakes. If you bend it in the wrong place, you won't be able to fix the job.

8. Sanitary paper.

Used in everyday life. This category includes: toilet paper, paper towels. This paper is used in the manufacture of products in which it is necessary to replicate the complex texture of leather or skin.

There are several more not very common types of paper: velvet, corrugated cardboard, drawing paper, shagreen paper, but in origami they are used very rarely or not at all.

At the initial stage, I would advise you to hone your folding skills on a more pliable paper, such as printing paper.

In addition to paper, the work will require other materials. In the Kirikomi origami technique you cannot do without scissors. Glue will be needed to hold it together or add strength.

production of orders

In the printing production of printed products, various types of paper with different characteristics are used. Thin paper for receipts and office forms is not suitable for printing advertising posters; Thick designer paper is perfect for making invitations or exclusive business cards, but it is unlikely to be appropriate for brochures with instructions for household appliances.

Paper sizes

In printing there are standard sizes paper sheet according to ISO 216 classification. The most well-known formats are the “A” series (from A10 to A0). Most standard orders involve the production of printed products in the following formats:

  • A6 - 105x148 mm;
  • A5 - 148x210 mm;
  • A4 - 210x297 mm;
  • A3 - 297x420 mm;
  • A2 - 420x594 mm;
  • A1 - 594x841 mm.

There are not only sheet papers, but also roll papers, which are used mainly for printing large runs of periodicals.

Types of paper

There are three main types of paper that our printing house works with:

  • Offset. Paper used for printing on an offset press, risograph or screen printing. Used for the production of forms, magazines and other products containing text, tabular information and simple images;
  • Coated. Paper with a special coating, which mainly consists of an adhesive and a chalky pigment. Can be matte or glossy. Used for full-color high-quality printing of advertising and presentation products;
  • Cardboard. Material with high strength - used for the manufacture of covers, consumer packaging, etc. products.

Density

Paper density can vary from 50 to 350 g/sq.m. Leaflets, receipts, instructions, etc. are printed on the thinnest paper (50-65 g/m2). On thicker (80-130 g/sq.m.) - the inner sheets of books, magazines, calendars, and paper with a density
150 g/sq.m or more is used for the production of representative products, covers, packaging, etc.

Chroma

Papers can be uncolored (white paper with varying degrees of whiteness) or colored in bulk (colored paper). The choice of paper type is determined based on what kind of printing products you order - for example, leaflets, forms of self-copied receipts, some advertisements, brochure covers, etc. are printed on colored paper.

White

Degree of paper bleaching. Paper with low whiteness is used for printing inexpensive printing materials with short term services: official forms, receipts, etc. Paper with the highest whiteness coefficient is used for printing advertising posters, booklets, invitations, etc., representative products.

Surface texture

The nature of the paper surface has a significant impact on the perception of printed products. The following types of surfaces are distinguished:

  • Smooth. Ordinary offset or coated paper and the like;
  • Embossed. A printed or textured paper surface is often used to make business cards;
  • Rough. These are mostly designer papers. Allows you to enrich the shades of colors. Used for printing business cards, folders and other representative products.

For long-term and uninterrupted operation of copiers, as well as for print quality on different printers, it is important to select the right consumables. Each technique requires certain products. Information on how to choose printer paper and which one is suitable can be found in the device's operating instructions. If you adhere to these requirements and use good products, this will extend its service life.

Types of printer paper:

  • glossy;
  • matte;
  • bright white;
  • copying;
  • For inkjet printing;
  • for laser printing;
  • perforated;
  • photo paper.

So which paper is best for laser and inkjet printers? There are many parameters to consider here, which depend on the type of document or photo you need to print. But as a rule, paper is divided into classes: A, B, C. The quality of the printed document depends on them. The higher the class, the better the print quality.
The quality of this product is also affected by:

  • density;
  • brightness;
  • smoothness;
  • white;
  • humidity.

To determine which paper is best for a color printer, you need to consider its smoothness. A product with a smooth and even surface will ensure uniform paint application and high-quality color rendition.

So, what kind of printer paper is there?

White paper is the most popular. There are different formats: A3, A4, A5. Other important parameters: sheet geometry, edge cutting accuracy - everything must be smooth, without any burrs, otherwise the print quality will decrease or it may get stuck in the machine.
Another important parameter is density. Depending on the paper weight used for the printer, uninterrupted long work technology. If consumables will be of low density, then during printing it may tear or two sheets may fall into the device, which causes inconvenience in work. The thickness of the printer paper will determine its weight. Density is measured in grams per square meter.
When deciding which printer paper to choose, you should definitely not buy the cheapest, thinnest and poorest quality, since such savings can have a bad effect on your equipment, and much more will be spent on its repair. It's best to stop at optimal option quality and price, unless we are talking about important documents or photographs. In this case, it is advisable to focus on the first indicator.
OFISMAG STANDARD paper has excellent performance characteristics and an attractive price.

Coated paper
White paper with a matte or glossy coated finish. Ideal for full-color printing: the colors on it are saturated. Not suitable for printing forms, notepads and other note-taking products. Recommended density 90–300 g/sq.m.

Offset paper
Loose white paper, often used for office equipment, “Snow Maiden” type. Used for printing forms, cubes, notepads, black and white printing. The colors on this type of paper turn out dull because the paper is highly absorbent. Be careful when printing on coated and offset paper the colors are noticeably different. Recommended density 70–80 g/m2. m. Colored offset paper Paperline.

Self-copying paper
Paper for printing forms, contracts, etc. Replaces copy paper. It has 3 layers: I - upper developing, II (intermediate) - developing and manifesting, and III - manifesting. Example: if you need forms in 2 copies, you need to take layers I + III. If you need the form in 4 copies: I+ II + II + III. The colors of the layers come in different colors: white, green, blue, pink. When ordering, do not forget to indicate your wishes for the color of the layer.

Self-adhesive paper
Has an adhesive layer on the reverse side. Designed for making stickers.

Label paper
It varies in moisture resistance and smoothness, based on the specific surface of the product (wood, metal, glass, cardboard, etc.). Density 70–90 g/sq.m.

Cardboard
Thick, loose paper. Cardboard comes in different types. Some types of cardboard:

Paper can be different: thin or thick, waterproof or non-waterproof. There are many types of paper, each of which has its own purpose. Thus, waterproof paper is not intended for painting pictures on it, and ordinary paper is not suitable for making a boat out of it, which will then sail on the water. Any type of paper should always be used only for its intended purpose. Let's try to list the most basic types of paper.

Main types of paper and their uses

Waterproof paper. Unlike other types of paper, waterproof paper contains much more bonding glue, the amount of which determines how resistant the paper will be to moisture. The more glue the paper contains, the slower it becomes saturated with water and falls apart. Waterproof paper is used mainly when creating various abstractions and blurry landscapes, which are done on damp paper.

Writing paper. It is used as a material for office equipment. Unlike other types of paper, writing paper folds well, it can be fixed for a long time in any desired shape, it is resistant to water, its price depends on the purity of the color and the smoothness of the surface. Writing paper has a protective kaolin layer. Writing paper, the sides of which are coated with polymer, is less transparent, stays clean longer and does not collect dust. This type of writing paper is used for sketching future paintings.

Coated paper. It is a type of writing paper. Coated paper has a coating of kaolin, calcium carbonate, or other clay-like minerals. The main types of coated paper have a matte or glossy surface.

Newsprint. Old newspapers can be used to create crafts. Sometimes artists create beautiful works from letters cut out from newspapers. U

Wrapping paper. This paper has a bright, colorful glossy surface, it is highly durable, and it is quite difficult to tear it with your hands. A huge selection of colors and good adhesion allow you to use wrapping paper to create beautiful applications.

Self-adhesive paper. Thanks to the adhesive layer, there is no need to apply glue to this paper. This also helps to avoid sloppy work. The main types of self-adhesive paper: colored, plain, transparent. This paper is often used in complex applications.

Wallpaper paper. Wallpaper paper can be smooth, with a pattern printed on it, or embossed. Using wallpaper paper, a variety of appliqué paintings are created.

Printing paper. The main types of printing paper are music and synthetic. The latter is used for magazines and covers. The surface of printing paper is smooth and often has bright colors. This paper is moisture resistant. When drying, work made from printing paper does not deform.

Tracing paper. Tracing paper is a paper that greatly facilitates work: with its help, the desired design can be transferred to the selected surface without much difficulty, therefore, when creating crafts, it is often indispensable. It can be transparent or translucent. The transparency of tracing paper is achieved by impregnating the paper with wax or oil. In addition to transferring images, tracing paper can be used in applications.

Cardboard. Cardboard is made from coarse cellulose, making it a dense and thick material that is used as a basis for appliqué work. Cardboard is also used to make photo frames and picture frames. The main types of paper of this type are: single-layer, multi-layer, packaging, printing. You need to choose the right cardboard. You need to bend the sheet of cardboard evenly, since an uneven bend cannot be corrected.

Stamping paper. To the average consumer it is known as drawing paper. Printing paper has high quality, thanks to which it is used not only for its intended purpose, but also for other work.

Shagreen paper. The appearance of this paper resembles embossed leather, making it easy to recognize. It is great for all types of applications.

Velvet paper. It is similar to ordinary colored cardboard, but has a surface of small fibers reminiscent of velvet. If you use such paper in applications, you can get interesting and beautiful works.

Sanitary paper. The main types of sanitary paper: toilet paper, paper for napkins and paper towels. Sometimes it is used to create funny applications and crafts.

Specialized paper. There are three types of specialized paper: special cardboard, material for liners, material that separates surfaces from each other. For example, such paper is used in boxes of candy or when creating three-dimensional frames.

Corrugated paper. It is distinguished by its thinness and unusual embossed surface. Colored corrugated paper is great for creating thin, airy crafts.

And these are just the main types of paper; in fact, paper can be very diverse, and it is difficult to name all its types. But even all of the above provides enormous scope for creativity.
